A dry pour β€” also called a dry pack slab or "pouring concrete dry" β€” means emptying bagged concrete mix into your forms as dry powder, screeding it level, then wetting it from above with a fine mist and letting the water work its way down. There is no mixing tub, no mixer, and no wheelbarrow.

It has become popular through DIY videos because it is genuinely much less work. It is also the single most argued-about technique in residential concrete, and it's worth understanding why before you commit a weekend to it.

Does Dry Pouring Actually Work?

The case for it: Portland cement hydrates with whatever water reaches it. On a thin slab over a damp, compacted base, misted repeatedly over a day or two, enough water does reach most of the mix. People have poured shed bases and garden pads this way that are still fine years later.

The case against it: You cannot verify hydration. In a wet mix you control the water-to-cement ratio precisely and you can see that every particle is wetted. In a dry pour you are hoping water penetrates evenly through the full depth, and any pocket that stays dry is simply loose sand and gravel inside your slab. It also traps more air, so the finished surface is more porous and noticeably more prone to scaling and dusting.

What testing shows: Independent break tests of dry-poured samples consistently come in below the bag's rated strength, often substantially, with much wider variation between samples than wet-mixed controls. No bag manufacturer lists dry pouring as an approved method for slabs, and no building code recognizes it for structural work.

How to Dry Pour a Slab: Step by Step

  1. Excavate and compact the base. This matters more here than in a wet pour, not less. Lay 4 inches of crushed stone and compact it in thin lifts.
  2. Dampen the base before you start. Moisture rising from below does a large share of the hydration on a dry pour. A dry base wicks water out of the slab.
  3. Set and level your forms. Build in a slight fall for drainage, roughly 1/8 inch per foot.
  4. Empty the bags in. Work across the form, breaking up any clumps. Lumps that don't crush are pre-hydrated cement and should come out.
  5. Rake level, then screed. Drag a straight 2x4 across the forms. You want an even depth everywhere β€” high spots stay dry inside.
  6. Tamp lightly. Compact the powder with a float or tamper. Denser packing means fewer voids for water to channel through instead of soaking in.
  7. Mist β€” don't spray. Use the finest setting you have. A jet of water carves channels and washes cement into puddles, leaving aggregate stripes behind.
  8. Wet in passes. Mist until the surface darkens, wait 20–30 minutes for it to soak, then repeat. Expect three or four passes.
  9. Check the depth. Push a screwdriver in at an edge. If it comes out with dry powder on it, keep misting.
  10. Keep misting for 24–48 hours. The slab needs sustained moisture, not one soaking.
  11. Cover and cure 7 days. Plastic sheeting holds the moisture in. Curing is what salvages a dry pour's strength, so don't skip it.
  12. Consider sealing. A penetrating sealer at 28 days helps offset the porous surface β€” worth it on any dry pour that sees weather.
