How to Calculate Deck Joists
Joist layout is simple arithmetic. The hard part is not the count β it is confirming that the joist you picked can actually carry the span at the spacing you chose.

Blocking pieces per row = Joists β 1
The "+ 1" is the closing joist at the far end of the run. A 16 ft wide deck at 16 in on center is (192 Γ· 16) + 1 = 13 joists. Miss the plus one and every deck you frame comes up a joist short.
Where the extra joists hide
- Doubled joists under a partition wall, a hot tub, or a stair landing. Anything concentrating load needs the joist doubled and often the beam and footing upsized with it.
- Doubled outside joists where a guard post lands, or blocking behind every post as backing.
- Around openings β a tree, a hot tub cut-out, a stair well β which need headers and doubled trimmers just like a floor.
- The rim joist at the outer edge, which is counted separately above. The two end joists are already inside the joist count β the outer rim closing the frame is not. That rim is what your guard posts, fascia and stair stringers attach to.

Joist Spacing: 12, 16 or 24 Inches
Spacing is dictated by the decking that goes on top, not by what is convenient to frame. Choose the decking first.

Tighter spacing also lets a smaller joist span further, which is occasionally the cheaper trade β a shallower joist at 12 in on center can sometimes beat a deeper one at 16 in on both cost and headroom. Look up both rows in your span table and price them out before you buy; the answer changes with species and lumber prices.
The expensive version of this mistake is framing at 16 in, then choosing a composite board that requires 12 in. Re-joisting a built frame means pulling the hangers and starting over.
How to Read a Joist Span Table
This is the part where a calculator has to be honest about its limits. We do not publish allowable joist spans, and you should be suspicious of any free calculator that does. A maximum span is not one number β it is the output of a table with half a dozen inputs, and the tables get amended locally and revised between code cycles. Printing a single figure here would be inviting somebody to under-size a joist on our word.
So instead: here is how to get the right number yourself in about five minutes, and the calculator above will check your actual span against it.
The two documents you want
- AWC DCA-6, the American Wood Council's Prescriptive Residential Wood Deck Construction Guide. Free from awc.org. It is written for exactly this job and covers joists, beams, posts, footings, ledgers and guards in one place.
- IRC Table R507.5, the deck joist span table in the International Residential Code. Your jurisdiction adopts a specific edition of the IRC, sometimes with amendments β the edition your building department enforces is the one that governs, not the newest one.
What you need before you open the table
- Species. Southern Pine, Douglas Fir-Larch, Hem-Fir, SPF and Western Red Cedar all have their own rows, and they are not interchangeable. The species is stamped on the lumber grade mark. Do not guess it from what the yard "usually" stocks.
- Grade. No. 2 is the framing standard and what most deck tables are built around, but No. 1 and Select Structural go further and Stud grade does not belong in a joist at all. Also on the grade stamp.
- Joist spacing. 12, 16 or 24 in on center. Closer spacing buys span, which is sometimes cheaper than going a size deeper.
- Design load. Residential decks are normally 40 psf live plus 10 psf dead. If yours carries a hot tub, a roof, planters or an outdoor kitchen, the prescriptive tables do not apply at all and you need an engineer.
- Wet service. Deck framing is exposed. Some tables already account for this and some apply a wet-service adjustment β check which you are reading.
- Cantilever. If joists overhang past the beam, the table gives a separate allowable overhang tied to the backspan. Overhanging further than allowed causes bounce and uplift at the ledger.
Find the row for your species and grade, read across to your spacing, and that cell is your allowable span. Type it into the "Allowable Span" box above and the calculator will tell you whether the span you are actually building clears it.
Two things that quietly destroy span
- Notching and drilling. A notch in the wrong part of a joist removes most of its capacity. The IRC sets strict limits on where and how deep. For a deck, run services below the framing instead.
- Substituting species mid-order. If the yard is out of what you priced and offers something else, the span table changes with it. Re-check before you accept the swap.
Then have the plan looked at. A permit review is the cheapest structural check you will ever get, and the inspector is reading the same table you are.

Blocking is not optional on long joists. Deep joists want to roll under load, and a row of full-depth blocking at mid-span stops it. The blocking selector above follows common practice for the span you entered; your code may require more, and it never requires less than none. Always block behind every guard post β a post lagged to an unblocked rim is the most common guard failure there is.
Ledger fastener spacing is a table lookup, not a judgement call. The required spacing tightens as the joist span grows, and it changes with fastener type, ledger thickness and what the band joist is made of. Read it out of DCA-6 or the IRC and enter it above. Get it wrong in the loose direction and the ledger connection is the thing that fails, which is the failure mode that hurts people.
Every connector and fastener touching pressure-treated wood must be hot-dipped galvanized to G185 or stainless. Modern ACQ and CA treatments strip plain and electroplated coatings within a few years, and a corroded hanger is a hidden failure. Keep the system consistent β mixing stainless fasteners into galvanized hardware invites galvanic corrosion.

Framing Order of Operations
- Confirm the span and size on paper first. Pull IRC Table R507.5 or DCA-6, find your species, grade and spacing, and check your local amendments. Do this before you buy lumber, not after.
- Set the ledger. Siding off, self-adhered flashing on the sheathing, ledger bolted to solid band joist with 1/2 in lags or through-bolts in two staggered rows at the spacing your code table gives, then cap flashing tucked behind the house wrap.
- Install the lateral load connection that ties deck joists back into the house floor framing. The device type and how many you need come from your code edition. Separate requirement from the ledger bolts, and not optional.
- Lay out the footings from the ledger. Batter boards and a 3-4-5 check beat eyeballing. Dig below the frost line and to whatever minimum depth your code sets.
- Pour footings, set standoff post bases in the wet concrete or anchor them after cure, and let the concrete gain strength before loading it.
- Set posts plumb and cut them to a level line transferred from the ledger, allowing for beam depth, joist depth and any drainage slope.
- Build and set the beam β plies fastened per the connector schedule, seated in post caps or in a notched 6x6 and through-bolted.
- Mark joist layout on the ledger and beam together so the two lines cannot drift apart. Hook the tape once and mark every increment.
- Hang the joists, crown up, hangers fully nailed, then add hurricane ties where joists bear on the beam.
- Add the rim, then the blocking, including solid backing behind every future guard post.
- Call for the framing inspection before a single deck board goes down. Once it is covered, nobody can see the connections that matter.
Framing mistakes that get flagged
- Ledger on brick veneer, stucco, or a cantilevered overhang. None of these can carry a deck. Build freestanding instead.
- Deck screws in joist hangers. Hangers are tested with specific nails or listed structural screws. Anything else is a failed inspection.
- Posts buried in dirt. Posts belong on concrete footings in standoff bases, not in a hole.
- Missing flashing. The single most common cause of deck collapse is rot at the ledger, and rot at the ledger is almost always water that had nowhere to go.
- Notching joists for wiring or plumbing. A notch in the wrong place takes most of a joist's capacity with it.

What spacing should deck joists be?
16 inches on center is standard for 5/4x6 and 2x6 wood decking. Composite and PVC boards and any 45 degree diagonal layout usually need 12 inches. 24 inches is only permitted with 2x decking specifically rated for it. Pick the decking before you frame β the decking sets the spacing.
How far can deck joists span?

Does the wood species change how far a joist can span?
Yes. Every published span table is printed with separate rows for Southern Pine, Douglas Fir-Larch, Hem-Fir, SPF and cedar precisely because they are not interchangeable, and the differences are large enough to change what size joist you buy. Read the species off the grade stamp on the lumber rather than assuming β and if the yard substitutes a different species on your order, re-check the table before accepting it.
What size joists do I need for my deck?
You look it up rather than estimate it. Take five things to the table: species, grade, joist spacing, design load, and whether the joists cantilever. Find your row in AWC DCA-6 or IRC Table R507.5, read across to your spacing, and that cell is your allowable span. Anyone quoting you a joist size without asking about species and grade is guessing.
Do deck joists need blocking?
Yes on anything but a short span. Deep joists roll under load, and a row of full-depth blocking at mid-span stops it. Common practice is one row on a moderate span and two rows on a long one, but your code sets the actual requirement β check it. Always add solid blocking behind every guard post regardless; an unblocked rim is the most common guard failure.
How many joist hangers do I need?
One per joist end that lands on a ledger or a flush beam. A 13 joist deck hung off a ledger with a drop beam at the far end needs 13 hangers. If both ends are flush-framed you need 26. Where joists bear on top of a drop beam, use hurricane ties instead of hangers.
Can I use deck screws in joist hangers?
No. Hangers are load-rated with specific joist hanger nails, or with structural screws that carry a current evaluation report for that hanger. Ordinary deck screws are not tested for shear in a hanger and will be rejected at inspection. Fill every hole in the hanger, not just the convenient ones.
How far apart should deck beam posts be?
Commonly 6 to 8 feet on residential decks, but the correct figure comes from a beam span table using your beam size, ply count, species and the joist span landing on it. A tripled 2x12 spans further than a doubled 2x10. Never pick post spacing to suit where digging is easy.
How do I attach a deck ledger to the house?
To solid rim or band joist framing only, with 1/2 in lag screws or through-bolts in two staggered rows, kept back from the board ends and edges. Flash it: membrane behind, cap flashing over the top tucked under the house wrap. Add the code-required lateral load devices separately. Never attach a ledger to brick veneer, stucco, or a cantilevered floor.
How many ledger bolts do I need?
The required spacing comes from the ledger fastener table in the IRC or AWC DCA-6, and it varies with joist span, fastener type, ledger thickness and what the band joist is made of. It tightens as the joist span grows. We do not print a spacing here because getting it wrong in the loose direction is how ledger connections fail. Read it out of the table, enter it above, and the calculator will count the fasteners.
Should deck joists be crown up or crown down?
Crown up. Almost every joist has a slight bow along its edge; installing the convex edge upward means the load flattens it out rather than making a dip worse. Sight down every joist before hanging it and mark the crown. It takes seconds and it is the difference between a flat deck and a wavy one.
Can deck joists cantilever past the beam?
Yes, and a modest cantilever is common because it hides the beam and shortens the main span. But cantilevers are limited to a fraction of the backspan under the prescriptive tables, and overhanging too far causes bounce and uplift at the ledger. Take the allowable overhang from the same table you took the span from, not from what looks right.
Can I notch or drill a deck joist for wiring?
Only within strict limits, and the safest answer for a deck is to run services below the framing instead. Notches in the middle third of the bottom edge are prohibited in floor framing for good reason, and a notch in the wrong place removes most of a joist. If you must penetrate, check the IRC cutting and notching rules first.
