Excavation is the line that moves most and the one homeowners forget. A 300 sq ft patio dug 8 inches deep produces about 7.5 cubic yards of spoil β roughly two dump trailer loads. If it cannot be spread on site it becomes a haul-away fee, and if a machine cannot reach the yard it becomes a lot of wheelbarrow hours.
What Drives the Price
1. Base depth, which is set by your soil and use
The rule of thumb is 4 to 6 inches of compacted aggregate for a foot-traffic patio, 8 to 12 inches for a driveway, and more in clay soils or freeze-thaw regions. A quote that assumes 4 inches on heavy clay in a cold climate is not comparable to one that assumes 8, and the difference is invisible the day the job finishes. Base depth requirements are local: soil type, drainage and frost depth all feed into it, so ask what the installer is designing to and why.
2. Access
If a skid steer can reach the patio area, excavation and base placement take hours. If everything moves through a 36-inch gate by wheelbarrow, the same job takes days. Access is often the single largest reason two quotes on the same patio differ.
3. Cutting and pattern
A running bond in a rectangle generates around 5% waste. Herringbone at 45 degrees, curved edges, circle kits and multi-size modular patterns push waste to 10% to 15% and add hours of saw time. Every curve is a row of individually cut pavers.
4. Grade and drainage
A patio needs a fall of roughly 1/8 to 1/4 inch per foot away from the house. On flat ground that is straightforward. On a sloping lot it may require a retaining edge, a step-down, or a French drain β any of which can add a four-figure sum. If the patio sits against the house, where the water goes matters more than what the surface looks like.
5. Extras that get quoted as part of the patio
Seat walls, fire pits, steps, lighting conduit and a soldier-course border are all commonly bundled into a patio quote. A seat wall alone frequently runs $80 to $200 per linear foot. When quotes differ wildly, check first whether they include the same extras.

One genuinely useful distinction: concrete pavers are pigmented and clay brick is coloured all the way through. A concrete paver can fade over 10 to 20 years, especially in strong sun; clay does not. If long-term colour matters to you, that is a better reason to pay more than any surface texture.
Permeable pavers are not just a surface swap. They need an open-graded stone base that is typically deeper than a standard base, and they cannot be laid on the compacted fines used for a normal patio. If a quote offers permeable pavers at standard-base pricing, the base is wrong.
DIY vs Hiring Out
A paver patio is a genuinely good DIY project β better than concrete, because nothing is permanent within an hour and a badly set paver can be lifted and reset. Materials are roughly 35% to 45% of an installed price, so the savings are real.
- It is mostly earth-moving. Expect to remove 8 to 10 inches of soil across the whole area, which is the hard part and the part no tool makes easy if a machine cannot get in.
- Compaction is the skill. Base must go in lifts of 2 to 3 inches and each lift gets compacted. A rented plate compactor is around $70 to $110 per day and is not optional β hand tamping a full patio base does not work.
- Screeding the bedding sand is the second skill. One inch of coarse concrete sand, screeded flat on rails, never compacted before laying, never used to fix base humps.
- Cutting needs the right saw. A masonry blade on a circular saw handles a few cuts; a curved edge or a herringbone field wants a rented wet saw or a cut-off saw.
- Budget the time honestly. A 200 sq ft patio is a realistic three to four weekend project for two people who have not done it before.
If you are hiring out and want to trim cost, doing the excavation and spoil disposal yourself is the highest-value split. It removes a large labour block and it is the one part that needs muscle rather than judgement. Confirm the installer will accept a homeowner-dug excavation first, and expect them to check the depth before base goes in.
How to Compare Quotes
Get three and force them onto the same specification. Ask each installer to write down:
- Excavation depth in inches, and where the spoil goes.
- Base material and compacted depth β how many inches of what, compacted in how many lifts.
- Whether geotextile fabric is included, and if not, why not on your soil.
- Bedding layer β 1 inch of coarse concrete sand is standard. Screenings or stone dust as bedding is a warning sign.
- Paver product by manufacturer, line and thickness. Patio pavers are commonly 60 mm; driveway-rated are 80 mm.
- Edge restraint type and how it is spiked.
- Joint sand β polymeric or plain, and which brand.
- Finished slope in inches per foot, and the direction water leaves.
- What is included beyond the field β border course, steps, seat wall, fire pit, lighting.
- Warranty β specifically what it says about settlement, and for how long.
A quote that is dramatically cheaper has almost always cut base depth, compaction lifts, or excavation depth. Those three are invisible the day the job is finished and they are exactly what determines whether the patio is flat in eight years. Ask what specifically differs rather than assuming you found a bargain.
Where You Can Save and Where You Should Not
Real savings
- Do the excavation and haul the spoil yourself. The biggest single DIY-able labour block on the job.
- Keep the shape rectangular. Curves are paid for one cut paver at a time; a rectangle can cut waste from 15% to about 5%.
- Choose a standard concrete paver in a common size. The style difference is smaller than the price difference, and common sizes are easier to source for repairs later.
- Lay a running bond rather than 45-degree herringbone for a foot-traffic patio. Herringbone is genuinely stronger under vehicle loads but that is not what a patio sees.
- Skip the contrasting soldier border if budget is tight. It is purely decorative and it is all cut work.
- Book in the shoulder season. Hardscape crews are fully booked in late spring and often negotiable in autumn.
- Reduce the size. Most patios are used for a table, a grill and a walking lane. Measure the furniture before choosing dimensions.
False economies
- Thinning the base. Below about 4 inches compacted on a patio, or below 8 on anything vehicles touch, the patio settles unevenly and there is no fix short of lifting and rebuilding.
- Compacting the base in one thick lift. A plate compactor only densifies the top 2 to 3 inches. One 6-inch pour compacted once is a 3-inch base with 3 inches of loose fill under it.
- Using bedding sand to level out a bad base. A thick sand layer migrates under load and the patio becomes wavy. One inch, uniform, always.
- Skipping edge restraint. Without it the perimeter courses creep outward, joints open, and the field unravels from the edges inward. It is a few dollars per foot against rebuilding the perimeter.
- Using play sand or stone dust as bedding. Fine sand holds water and pumps; the correct material is coarse concrete sand.
- Skipping polymeric joint sand to save a few bags. Plain sand washes out, joints open, and weeds and ants colonise them within a season or two.
- Building flat or sloping toward the house. A patio must fall away from the foundation. This one is not a cost decision at all, but it is the mistake with the most expensive consequences.
The pattern is consistent with every hardscape project: saving on labour you can supply, on size, and on decoration is sensible. Saving on excavation depth, base depth or compaction is not, because those are the only things standing between you and a settled, puddled patio in five to ten years. A correctly built paver patio should last 25 to 40 years, and individual damaged pavers can be lifted and swapped β an advantage no poured slab has.
