How to Hang and Finish Drywall

Hanging drywall is mostly geometry and patience; finishing it is mostly patience and light. Get the layout right before you cut a single sheet, and the rest of the job goes fast. Rush the layout and you will spend twice as long chasing bad seams later. This guide walks the whole process in order, from measuring the room to the final coat of compound.

Test before you disturb an old ceiling. Textured or "popcorn" ceilings installed before the early 1980s may contain asbestos, and older joint compound sometimes does too. Step 1: Plan the Layout

Measure each wall and the ceiling, and sketch where sheets will land before you cut anything. The goal is to minimize seams and avoid a seam falling in a bad spot — over a door header, for instance, where the stress concentration cracks the joint. Standard sheets are 4×8 ft; 4×12 ft sheets cut seams in half on longer walls and are worth the extra weight and awkwardness to carry. Hang sheets perpendicular to the framing wherever the run allows it — horizontal on studs, across joists on a ceiling — because that orientation ties more framing members together per sheet and resists cracking better than running sheets parallel to the studs.

Step 2: Prep the Framing

Walk every stud and joist bay before drywall goes up. Confirm insulation and vapor barrier are in and wiring is stapled back from the framing face so a screw cannot find it. Check the framing itself for crowned or bowed studs — sight down each one, and plane or shim anything more than about 1/4 in out, because a crowned stud telegraphs through the finished wall as a visible ridge no amount of compound will hide. Snap chalk lines on the floor and ceiling marking stud and joist centers so you can find them once they are covered.

Step 3: Cut Sheets to Size

Measure twice, score once. Run a utility knife along a T-square through the face paper only, snap the sheet away from the cut to break the gypsum core, then run the knife down the back paper to separate the piece. For openings — outlets, switches, windows — measure from two fixed edges of the sheet and cut with a rotary tool from the front so you can follow the line by feel. Cut sheets a hair small rather than tight; drywall that has to be forced into place cracks its corners.

Step 4: Hang the Ceiling First

Ceilings go up before walls, for two reasons: gravity, and so the wall sheets can support the ceiling sheets' edges instead of the other way around. Run sheets perpendicular to the joists and stagger the end joints so no single joist carries two sheet ends in a row. A panel lift is worth renting for anything bigger than a closet — holding a 57 lb sheet overhead while driving screws is how backs and drywall corners both get hurt. Leave the perimeter to the wall sheets to catch; you do not need to fasten every ceiling edge into a top plate that the wall board will cover anyway.

Step 5: Hang the Walls

Hang the top sheet on each wall first so it supports the ceiling joint, then work down. Stagger vertical seams so they do not line up from one course to the next, and stagger them from the ceiling seams too — a seam that runs in a straight line across a ceiling-to-wall corner is one of the most visible finishing headaches you can create for yourself. Leave a 1/2 in gap at the floor; drywall that touches the slab wicks up moisture and the gap gets covered by base trim anyway. A couple of scrap blocks under the sheet while you fasten it holds that gap consistently.

Step 6: Screw Pattern

Fasten every 12 in along sheet edges and every 16 in in the field (the interior of the sheet, on intermediate studs or joists), which works out to roughly 32 screws on a 4×8 sheet. Keep every screw at least 3/8 in from the edge — closer than that and the gypsum edge crumbles and loses its grip. Drive each screw just far enough to dimple the paper without breaking it; a screw that tears through the face paper has lost most of its holding strength and needs a second screw an inch or two away, not a deeper turn of the same one.

Step 7: Tape and First Coat

Before any tape goes on, set any proud screws and knock down torn paper — compound cannot fix a badly hung sheet, and a bulge that starts at the framing stays a bulge through every coat on top of it. Bed paper tape into a thin layer of compound over every seam with a 6 in knife, pressing firmly enough to squeeze the excess out from under it, and fill the screw dimples in the same pass. Inside corners get folded tape creased down the middle; outside corners get metal or plastic corner bead nailed or crimped on before mudding.

Step 8: Fill and Finish Coats

Apply a second, wider coat with a 10 in knife once the first has dried, feathering the edges out past the tape so the seam blends into the field. A third coat with a 12 in knife, applied thin and feathered 12–14 in wide, brings the transition down to nothing. Pre-mixed all-purpose compound needs roughly 12 to 24 hours to dry between coats — do not rush it, since trapped moisture under a sealed-over coat causes cracking later. If you are finishing in one day, a setting-type compound (sold by working time — 20, 45, 90, or 210 minutes) hardens chemically instead of drying, so you can run two or three coats in an afternoon. Step 9: Sand and Inspect

Sand lightly between coats only enough to knock down ridges and tool marks — you are not trying to remove material, just smooth it. Once the final coat is dry, inspect with a work light held flat against the wall at a raking angle; this is the single best way to find a seam that still needs work, because it shows shadows a straight-on look misses completely. Wear an N95 or better mask while sanding — drywall dust is fine enough to work deep into lungs, and a shop vac with a fine filter run nearby cuts down what goes airborne.
