How to Lay a Paver Patio

A paver patio is one of the few genuinely DIY-able hardscape projects, because nothing sets and nothing is permanent until you decide it is. It is also one of the most commonly botched, and the failures are boringly consistent: not enough compacted base, too much bedding sand, and no edge restraint. Get those three right and the rest is patience. This guide is the field procedure β€” what to do, in what order, and what each step is actually for.

Before You Dig

Three things happen before a shovel moves, and skipping any of them costs more than the patio.

Then work out quantities. You need pavers, base stone, bedding sand, joint sand and edge restraint, and they come from four different aisles or yards. Nothing stops a patio build faster than running out of base stone on a Saturday afternoon.

Tools and Materials

The rental list is short but non-negotiable. A hand tamper cannot compact a base β€” it consolidates the top inch and leaves the rest loose, which is why hand-tamped patios settle.

Do not substitute washed drainage stone like #57 for base stone. Clean round stone has no fines to lock the matrix together, so it never truly compacts and it stays mobile under load. Base stone must be an angular crushed product with fines in it.

Step 1: Lay Out the Patio and Set the Slope

Stake the finished shape and run mason's line at the intended finished paver height, not at ground level. Square the corners with the 3-4-5 method on the largest triangle the patio allows β€” errors in squaring compound as you lay, and a patio that is out of square shows up as a tapering cut row along one edge.

Now build the slope into the string lines. A paver surface needs at least 1/8 inch of fall per foot away from the house, and 1/4 inch per foot is better. Over a 12 ft patio that is 1.5 to 3 inches of drop. Set the low-end string that much lower and check it with a line level. Every layer below β€” subgrade, base, sand β€” is built parallel to this plane, which is why you establish it first and never try to create slope in the bedding sand later.

Mark the excavation line 6 to 12 inches outside the finished paver edge on every open side. That extra width of compacted base is what the edge restraint spikes into. Restraint anchored in loose backfill does nothing.

Step 2: Excavate to the Full Depth

Total excavation depth is compacted base depth + 1 inch of bedding sand + paver thickness. Work that number out before you dig, because discovering you are 2 inches shallow after the base is compacted means taking it all back out.

Base depth depends on what will drive or walk on it: 4 to 6 inches compacted for foot traffic, and 8 to 12 inches for vehicles. Add roughly 2 inches over clay subgrade or in freeze-thaw country. With a standard 2 3/8 in (60 mm) pedestrian paver, a 6 in base means digging about 9 3/8 inches; a driveway on 80 mm units and a 10 in base is over 14 inches.

Strip all sod, topsoil and roots. Organic material decomposes and leaves voids, so it all has to come out even if that means going deeper than your target in places β€” then bring those spots back up with compacted base stone, never with soil.

Step 3: Compact and Check the Subgrade

Run the plate compactor over the bare subgrade before any stone goes down. It should feel firm underfoot with no springiness. If the machine leaves ruts or the ground pumps water, the soil is too wet or too soft β€” let it dry, or dig out the soft material and replace it with compacted stone.

Check the subgrade against your string lines. It should already carry the finished slope, uniformly. A subgrade that is flat while the surface is sloped means your base varies in thickness, and the thin end is where settlement starts.

Over clay, silt or anything that holds water, roll out woven geotextile across the subgrade with generous overlaps and let it run up the excavation sides. It stops the base stone from being pumped down into the mud under repeated loading, which is a slow failure that no amount of extra stone prevents.

Step 4: Build the Base in Lifts

This is where the patio is actually built. Spread base stone in lifts of 3 to 4 inches, mist each lift lightly with a hose so the fines bind rather than blow away, and compact until the machine stops sinking and the stone stops moving under it β€” usually three or four passes in alternating directions. A 6 inch base is two lifts. A 10 inch base is three. Dumping the full depth and compacting once produces a hard crust over loose stone, and it will settle.

Crushed base loses roughly 20 to 25% of its loose volume when compacted, so order accordingly β€” the calculator builds that allowance in.

Check flatness and slope on the finished base with a long straightedge and your strings, and fix problems here. Add stone to low spots, recompact, re-check. Anything you leave in the base you will be fighting for the rest of the job, because the bedding sand is one inch thick and cannot bridge a dip.

Step 5: Screed Exactly One Inch of Bedding Sand

Be blunt about this one, because it is the classic DIY paver failure: the sand bed is one inch, and only one inch. Not two, not three, and never "whatever it takes to level things out."

Sand does not compact into a structural layer β€” under load it behaves like a fluid. A 1 inch layer has nowhere to migrate to, so it stays put. A 3 inch layer moves sideways under wheel and foot loads and the pavers above it sink in exactly the pattern of the traffic. Every rutted, wavy paver patio you have seen was bedded on too much sand.

Use ASTM C33 concrete sand β€” coarse, washed and sharp-edged. Not mason sand, which is too fine and stays soft. Not play sand, which is fine, round and washed of everything that gives it grip.

Lay your two 1 inch screed rails on the compacted base, parallel and set to the finished slope. Fill between them, then pull the straightedge across both rails to strike the sand off level. Lift the rails, fill the grooves by hand, and smooth. Do not compact the sand and do not walk on it. Screed a section, lay it, then screed the next β€” never screed the whole patio at once, because you cannot reach the middle without stepping on it.

Step 6: Lay the Field

Start from the straightest, most visible edge β€” usually the house wall β€” and work outward, standing on the pavers you have already set rather than on the sand. Set each paver straight down into place. Never slide it, because sliding ploughs sand ahead of the unit and creates a ridge under the next one.

Snap a chalk line or run a string every few feet and check your courses against it constantly. Running bond and herringbone both creep if you let them, and creep is invisible for ten rows and then obvious. Correct a 1/8 inch drift immediately; do not wait for it to become an inch.

Pull pavers from three or four pallets at once and mix as you go. Concrete pavers vary in shade between production batches, and laying one pallet out completely before opening the next produces visible blocks of colour across the finished patio.

Leave the joint spacing the manufacturer casts into the unit β€” most pavers have small spacer nibs on their sides. Butting them tight leaves no room for joint sand, and joint sand is what transfers load between units.

Step 7: Cut the Perimeter

Lay the full field first and cut the edges last. Set whole pavers over the perimeter, mark them in place with a pencil or crayon against the string line, then cut them all in one session β€” it is far faster than cutting one at a time and produces a straighter edge.

Avoid pieces narrower than about a third of a paver. Slivers break during compaction, work loose under traffic, and look like a mistake. If your layout is producing slivers along one side, shift the whole field an inch or two and re-check before you commit.

Cut wet where possible. Dry-cutting concrete generates respirable crystalline silica, which is a serious and cumulative lung hazard, not a nuisance. Water on the blade suppresses most of it. Wear a fitted respirator regardless.

Step 8: Install Edge Restraint

Edge restraint is not optional and it is not decorative. Interlocking pavement works because every unit is confined by its neighbours. The perimeter units have no outside neighbour, so without restraint they spread, the joints open, the joint sand washes out, and the failure walks inward from the edge over a few seasons.

Set rigid plastic or aluminium paver edging directly on the compacted base β€” this is what that 6 to 12 inches of extra base width was for β€” tight against the outside face of the perimeter pavers, and spike it every 10 to 12 inches with 10 inch spikes. Edging sitting on soil or on bedding sand does nothing.

Where the patio meets a house wall, a step or an existing slab, that structure is the restraint and no edging is needed. Every free edge needs it.

Step 9: Compact the Pavers into the Sand

With the field laid, the edges cut and the restraint spiked, run the plate compactor over the pavers in two or three passes at right angles to each other. This is the step that seats each unit about 1/8 to 1/4 inch into the bedding sand and locks the surface together β€” which is why the screed sits fractionally proud of the intended finished height.

Fit a rubber pad to the compactor plate, or spread a thin layer of joint sand over the surface first, so the plate does not chip and scuff the paver faces. Sweep the surface clean of grit before you start for the same reason.

If a paver cracks under the compactor, lift it and replace it now. It will not get better.

Step 10: Fill the Joints

Sweep polymeric sand across the surface and work it into every joint with a stiff broom, going in several directions. Then run the compactor again to vibrate the sand down, top up, and sweep again. Joints should be filled to roughly 1/8 inch below the paver chamfer β€” full, but not heaped.

Now the part people get wrong: the surface and the paver faces must be completely dry and swept clean before you activate the sand. Polymeric sand left on the faces cures into a haze that is genuinely difficult to remove. Blow the surface off with a leaf blower held at a shallow angle, which moves surface dust without emptying the joints.

Water it exactly as the bag says β€” most products want a specific light, staged watering rather than a soaking, and over-watering floats the binder out. Check the forecast: you need the manufacturer's stated dry window, commonly a few hours to overnight, with no rain.
