How Roofing Is Measured
Roofers estimate materials in squares. One roofing square equals 100 square feet of roof surface — not floor space. Because a sloped roof covers more area than the footprint beneath it, you multiply the footprint by a slope (pitch) factor.

Slope Factor = √(1 + (rise ÷ 12)²)
For example, a 4/12 pitch has a slope factor of about 1.054, so a 1,200 sq ft footprint becomes roughly 1,265 sq ft of roof before waste.
