How Much Stucco Do I Need per Square Foot?

Stucco is sold by the bag but applied by thickness, so every estimate runs through the same conversion your plaster thickness makes into volume:

The Three Stucco Systems

Which system you're building determines your total thickness, and thickness is the whole estimate. There are three, and they aren't interchangeable β€” the substrate decides for you.

Three-Coat over Lath (7/8 inch)

The traditional system, and the only option over wood framing or sheathing. Weather-resistant barrier goes on first, then metal lath, then three coats: a 3/8 inch scratch coat keyed into the lath and raked horizontally, a 3/8 inch brown coat that brings the wall flat and plumb, and a 1/8 inch finish coat that carries the color and texture. Total 7/8 inch, which is the code-referenced thickness for stucco over lath.

Two-Coat over Masonry (1/2 inch)

Over concrete block, brick, or poured concrete, no lath is needed β€” the masonry itself provides the key. A 3/8 inch base coat goes directly onto the (clean, dampened) wall, followed by the same 1/8 inch finish. Total 1/2 inch. This is the cheapest of the three because you skip both the lath and a full coat.

One-Coat Systems (3/8–1/2 inch)

Proprietary fiberglass-reinforced products applied over lath and rigid foam in a single 3/8 to 1/2 inch pass, plus finish. They install substantially faster and are common in new tract construction. The tradeoff is that you're locked to one manufacturer's system and its specific approval listing β€” mixing brands voids it.

Mixing Your Own Stucco: Sand, Cement, and Lime

Bagged base coat is convenient, but on a large job mixing from raw materials is markedly cheaper. The traditional base coat proportion is 3 parts sand to 1 part cementitious material, where the cementitious portion is portland cement plus a little lime for workability.

Use washed plaster or mason sand, not concrete sand β€” the coarse aggregate in concrete sand tears the surface as you trowel. Lime makes the mix creamier and much more forgiving to work, which matters a great deal across a full day on a wall.

How to Apply Three-Coat Stucco

  1. Install the weather barrier. Two layers of grade D building paper or an approved house wrap over sheathing. This is your actual water control layer β€” stucco is not waterproof.
  2. Attach the lath. Self-furring metal lath, fastened into studs every 6 inches vertically. Overlap seams and keep the cups facing up so the scratch coat keys into them.
  3. Add casing bead and weep screed. Weep screed at the base lets trapped water escape β€” code requires it at least 4 inches above grade.
  4. Apply the scratch coat, 3/8 inch. Press hard enough to push material fully through the lath. This mechanical key is what holds the whole wall up.
  5. Rake it horizontally. Score the surface with a scarifier while it's still green, giving the brown coat something to grip.
  6. Moist-cure 48 hours. Mist the scratch coat so it cures rather than dries. Skipping this is the most common cause of later cracking.
  7. Apply the brown coat, 3/8 inch. This is the coat that makes the wall flat and plumb. Rod it with a straightedge and float it β€” the finish coat is far too thin to correct anything.
  8. Moist-cure 7 days. Then let it dry before finishing. Rushing here shows up as cracks and color variation later.
  9. Apply the finish coat, 1/8 inch. Integral-color acrylic or cement finish, worked to your chosen texture β€” sand float, dash, lace, or smooth.
  10. Keep a wet edge. Finish coat must go on wall-to-wall without stopping mid-field, or you'll see the joint permanently. Plan crew and breaks around natural stopping points.
  11. Cure and protect. Keep it damp and out of direct sun and wind for the first few days.

Realistically, the scratch and brown coats are within reach of a determined DIYer on a small wall. The finish coat is where skill shows β€” an uneven texture or a visible cold joint is permanent, and many people hire out that step alone.
